WELCOME TO VOWEL

The VOWEL project proposes to tackle the linguistic skills problem by setting up a distance learning platform dedicated to language training through Internet or Intranet mode the eLearning solution relying on a virtual environment using 3D virtual reality technologies and simulating both the physical work environment (office, factory, reception desk, etc.) and the interaction between different players in that environment (customers, suppliers, colleagues, etc.).

This solution, which makes it possible to configure the working language, the cultural context, the place and scenario of specific communication situations, offers a set of synchronous and asynchronous functionalities promoting language learning in an entertaining and interactive way. Each learner can move freely in a set of virtual environments buildings, factories, meeting rooms, etc. by taking on the form of a character, by interacting with other learners during programmed scenarios or workgroup sessions and by communicating with a tutor. In asynchronous mode, the connected learner interacts with virtual robotic characters (avatars). Every session, the learner's progress is taken into account and he/she is provided with action sheets, grammar sheets, exercises and activities to do- all based on a scenario.

The solution's continuous on-line availability, the possibility of programming very concrete scenarios related to the learners' daily work situation, the assistance of a tutor for learners experiencing problems, the conviviality of the training environment's workgroup functions and the attractiveness of virtual reality, will make this system particularly suited to its target public and the working context, differing from standard language learning methods (books, CDs, etc.) which offer little stimulation.

By addressing the issue of improving foreign language skill levels, the VOWEL project is committed to the empowerment of human resources in companies, favouring the lifelong learning concept. It aims to be an example of an educational collaborative tool for language learning within the enterprise.

The VOWEL project will design e-learning solution, test it on several sites in Europe with the support of technical players and European vocational training players. It will concentrate in the beginning in English, French and Spanish and handle professional situations in those languages, to come up with a implementation methodology and to ensure its promotion throughout Europe.
